My Free Spirit Story

I love to create from my free spirit! There is a freedom found when creating with nature, when sitting quietly with my inner spirit, when listening to what is around me and in my heart. I create as a way to express myself, to show in images what I cannot express in words. I love my art journal and my writing journal as places to freely explore and express what is happening in my life. In my art, I get to be like a child again and be messy and play!

I grew up loving to create and be artistic. I loved being outside and exploring nature. As I found myself in my teenage years, succumbing to peer pressure and society's expectations, I lost some of my desire to be in nature and create. This left me searching and a little lost. In college, my love of art returned and I took art classes, receiving a degree in graphic design. But, then as I pursued a career as a graphic artist, I suddenly felt as though my art was being put in a box. A box of expectations that became confining and restricted. Almost as though I couldn't breathe. I then found myself teaching art to elementary age children where I was able to be more artistically free and see art through a child's eyes. When life called me to other things, including motherhood, my art was put back in a box once again. While I did encourage creativity in my own daughter, my personal creative time was not a priority.

My art stayed "packed in a box" for many years. Then, one day, I slowly began to unpack that box when I felt a desperate need to connect back to myself. I began to realize art is more about who you are than what you do. It is a place I give myself permission to create whatever I want. To create what and how I want without expectations or restrictions.

For me, nature is a constant source of inspiration. I love to incorporate elements of nature that I find into my art work. I find freedom when I let my heart guide my creativity. Art has also given me a place for my inner spirit's voice to speak. My art has now become the place I feel free and more of me!

I love to create from my free spirit! There is a freedom found when creating with nature, when sitting quietly with God, when listening to what is around me. I create as a way to express myself, to show in images what I cannot express in words, but also to find words to express an image. I love my art journal and my writing journal as places to freely explore and express what is happening in my life. I get to be like a child again and be messy and play!

I had a time when I had lost my inner spark and the free spirit
side of me that connected to feeling alive and inspired for life.
I was surviving, not thriving. I was living stuck in routine, resisting
opportunities to refill my depleted soul and spirit. I had allowed
the loving care I gave my family to feel more like a duty than
a blessing. I had lost the desire to express myself and instead,
I was holding on too tightly to controlling myself and my life,
and I was isolating myself from friends and family. But, most of
all, while God was there, a relationship with Him wasn't.

I had forgotten how to nourish my free spirit self.

So I began to reawaken my creativity. The artist within. She had always been there. I had just buried her years ago when I thought I wasn't good enough. When what other people thought about my creativity fed that inner critic voice in my head which I couldn't help but listen to. I have been learning how to let go of that inner critic and listen more to what feels like freedom to me. What feels nourishing to me.

Through meditation and breathing practices, I connect within myself and with God. I have begun to invite God into my creative time. I have begun to enjoy the quiet times as a way to be inspired and hear what part of me needs to be expressed. When I create, my soul and spirit feel free again. I am expressing my free spirit because that is who God created me to be. FREE!

When you express yourself through creativity, you are showing your spirit,
your soul, and your heart that you are listening from the inside.

Once there was a girl who had God-given talent as an artist.

She was told to color in the lines. She wasn't given tons of encouragement to follow her own creative expression.

She left art behind.

God doesn't allow His gifting to the children that He loves to go wasted though and He wasn't done with her, yet.

He put up a wall in one direction to guide her back toward her true gifts.

He showed her fun again and in a new way...even in little things like gifts and cards for family and "flower" arrangements around the house. He showed her how to express herself using His creation, using artistic tools that had long been forgotten. He gave her a way to be who He created her to be and to share her story.

He blessed her with an outpouring that fills pages and canvasses.

And look what is happening now...look who she has become...
